A new study, led by a member of the lab, has been published in the _[Journal of Cybersecurity](https://academic.oup.com/cybersecurity/article/11/1/tyae029/7962044)._ The study explores the DeFi (decentralized finance) crime landscape, highlighting that DeFi actors are prominent targets of theft.

[Catherine Gaumond](https://www.econcrimelab.com/people/catherine-gaumond) joins the lab! For her masters thesis, she will explore how money laundering charges are prosecuted, adjudicated, and penalized within the Quebec judicial process.

New Study Published: An Exploration on Cryptocurrency Corporations’ Fiscal Opportunities

[Gabriel Arvisais](https://www.econcrimelab.com/people/gabriel-arvisais) successfully finished his masters thesis last month! He surveyed over 100  compliance officers to gain valuable insights into the influence of cryptocurrencies on their  work in detecting suspicious money laundering patterns. Gabriel's work shows that compliance officers still feel unequipped when dealing with crypto transactions and the presence of crypto increases their suspicion.  

[Gabriel Arvisais](https://www.econcrimelab.com/people/gabriel-arvisais) a réussi avec succès sa thèse de maîtrise le mois dernier! Il a interrogé plus de 100 responsables de la conformité afin de recueillir des informations  sur l'influence des cryptomonnaies sur leur travail de détection de schémas de blanchiment d'argent suspicieux. Le travail de Gabriel illustre que les responsables de la conformité se sentent mal équipés pour traiter les transactions en cryptomonnaies et que la présence de celles-ci augmente leur suspicion.

Gabriel Arvisais and Masarah Paquet-Clouston went to Vancouver last week to participate in the [25th Annual Vancouver International Privacy & Security Summit (VIPSS)](https://www.rebootcommunications.com/event/vipss2023/). Gabriel participated in a workshop on cryptocurrencies and Masarah was a panelist and discussed the use cryptocurrencies in money laundering schemes.

A new study from a team member has just been published in the scientific journal: Trends in Organized Crime. The study, named “On the Motivations and Challenges of Affiliates involved in Cybercrime” shows how individuals at the bottom of the supply chain of cybercrime struggle to achieve their tasks and are driven by dreams of money that never materialize.

Une nouvelle étude d'un membre de l'équipe vient d'être publiée dans la revue scientifique Trends in Organized Crime.
